Air Salvage International (ASI’s) latest bespoke repurposing project demonstrates how engineering expertise, innovation and imagination can transform an end-of-life aircraft into a valuable operational asset.
Completed on schedule and within budget, this unique project saw a retired Airbus A320 re-engineered into a fully operational training facility, now successfully installed in Germany and meeting all customer requirements.
The project required the conversion of forward and aft fuselage sections into a single, self-supporting structure. The team meticulously engineered the fuselage sections together, preserving the appearance of the original aircraft while ensuring the finished unit met all transportation and installation requirements.
To facilitate safe transport and long-term stability, the structure was mounted on a bespoke steel support cradle specifically designed for the project. Every stage of the process, from initial engineering and fabrication through to final installation, was managed by ASI’s experienced team.
A key objective was to recreate the look and feel of a commercial airliner interior, providing users with a highly realistic training environment. The finished facility incorporates many features found on an operational Airbus A320, including:
- LED cabin lighting
- Emergency lighting systems
- A fully functioning public address (PA) system
- Operational lavatories
- A mock flight deck
- Fully fitted galleys
- Original-style cabin furnishings and fittings
These elements combine to provide an immersive training environment that closely replicates the experience of working onboard a commercial aircraft.
Projects such as this highlight the significant opportunities that exist beyond an aircraft’s flying career. Through innovative repurposing, retired airframes can continue to deliver value in education, training, research and specialist operational environments.
